Mohiniattam is a traditional Indian classical dance form that originated in the state of Kerala. It is known for its graceful movements, subtle expressions, and intricate footwork. Mohiniattam is often performed by women, who wear elegant white and gold costumes, adorned with jewelry and flowers.
The dance form is characterized by its slow and lyrical movements, adavus accompanied by Chenda, Idukka, the popular musical percussion instruments of Kerala. The performer tells stories from Hindu mythology and folklore through expressive gestures, eye movements, and facial expressions and the Aharyam, the costumes play a key role in giving the identity at once and it adds beauty to the dance.
One of the key elements of Mohiniattam is the unique swaying movement of the body known as “lasya,” which creates a mystical and enchanting atmosphere. The hands of the Nartaki, the mohini is adorned beautifully with bangles either made of fine gold. The jewellery sets can be obtained from a traditional maker.
